The pathological disorders met at the sow level in the puerperal period are complex and can compromise their reproductive life. The puerperal period is considered at the limit between physiology and pathology and represents a special stage in which the sow is vulnerable at different pathological disorders. A study was undertaken to identify the main bacterial agents involved in the puerperal diseases and to estimate the evolution of subsequent reproductive functions from sow fertility point of view. The date analyses showed that the main bacterial species identified at the uterus level were: - Streptococcus beta haemolitic 100 per cent - Staphylococcus aureus - 16.6 per cent - E. coli - 16.6 per cent. Also it was found that at 69.7 per cent out of the surveyed sows, the uterine infections were pluribacteriale. Regarding the influence of puerperal period on sow fertility and the subsequent reproductive activity, we found that 60 per cent of treated sows had at least one more farrowing and 40 per cent were gradually culled because of chronic endometritis. However the treated sows were noted to have a decrease of litter size at 21 days from 9.2 to 6.8 piglets due to interaction between sow and piglets.
