PRECISION FORESTRY: towards developing a better picture of Mt. Makiling

Precision forestry seeks to identify forest information parameters (i.e. DBH, height, crown size) that one most relevant for sustainable forest management and link this dataset to the ground using advanced methods in information and communications technology. Precision forestry has not been tried in the Philippines and its applications in other parts of the world have been limited to forest harvesting and silviculture. However, precision forestry as an emerging field can provide the success parameters for a truly sustainable forest management which should include socio-economic benefits and biodiversity conservation. This paper recommends an operational framework for precision forestry that can be implemented on Mt. Makiling. This involves the installation of a GIS database and construction of an RFID (radio frequency identification) system that can monitor individual tree parameters. The system comprise the following components: an inventory system; a geodatabase; a GIS mapping system; and a statistical reporting system. The inventory system can be patterned after the FHIRM technique - a practical way of gathering data in the forest. It makes use of a GPS [global positioning system], compass, diameter tape, hypsometer, densitometer and a camera. The inventory data will then be encoded into the geodatabase following the GAME [GIS-based assessment, monitoring and evaluation] model and assigned to unique GAME units. And since it is a geodatabase, specific GIS maps can be produced and statistical analyses conducted. Additional and targeted expeditions can be programmed to finally complete the picture of Mt. Makiling.
