The effect of subclinical experimental infection with Haemonchosis on carcass quality of Karadi lambs

The current study was conducted to investigate the effect of sub clinical infection with Haemonchus contortus on physical properties of karadi lambs carcasses. A total of 14 karadi lambs 5-7 months old were used in this study. The lambs were divided into two groups. The first group (7 lambs) was considered as a control and remained uninfected. The second group (7 lambs) were experimentally infected with 500 infective larvae (L3) of Haemonchus contortus Kg **-1 body weight. This study continued until 13th weeks post-infection and at the end of the study all lambs were slaughtered worm burden carcass, quality were estimated. Data were statistically analyzed by spss program using T-test to determine the differences between control and infected group. The results revealed that there was differences in mean live weight at slaughter, empty live weight, hot carcass weight, chilled carcass weight and dressing proportion were (52.71),(48.64); (47.99),(43.78); (27.65),(24.62); (26.99),(24.03) and (51.16%),(49.08%) between control and infected groups respectively, but these differences statistically was not significant. However there was slight differences in rib-eye muscle area (Longissimus dorsi) and fat thickness (mm) between control and infected groups (13.94),(13.41) and (7.15),(5.32) mm respectively, but these differences statistically not significant. No significant difference were found in physical composition of carcasses in leg, fore shank and three ribs (9,10,11) area between control and infected groups. Generally the results indicate that there was slight effect of subclinical infection with H. contortus on the productive performance of karadi lambs. The study also revealed that there was variation in resistance and resilience of lambs or there susceptibility to parasitic infection.
