The significance of the rural sector in Serbia is undeniable, given that the rural areas cover about 70% of the Serbian territory, about 55% of the population is located in those areas and they constitute 41% of the GDP of the country. Rural areas are characterized by extreme poverty and very limited development possibilities. The main objective of this paper is to offer summary of the current situation, highlight the main trends and problems that the rural areas are facing and to define financial support for development of the rural regions in Serbia. In the first part, the author indicates an opportunity for development of the rural banking. The paper particularly emphasizes additional challenges, for banks and banking in general, which are related to unresolved property issues and collaterals. The second part contains proposal of some solutions that might be applied to clearly define the direction of the rural development strategy, bearing in mind that the rural development policy is one of the main EU policies.
