The effect of air temperatures and relative humidity withing a stratification room on bud break, onset of callus formation, callus quality and grafting success in walnut plants was observed in this experiment. The study was conducted at the Fruit Research Institute, Čačak (Serbia), during 2003 and 2004. One-year-old seedlings of domestic walnut (Juglans regia L.) were grafted with scions of cv. Šeinovo (control) and the selections Ovčar, Elit, G-286 and G-139. The whip-and-tongue grafting technique was used. The air temperature within the stratification room in 2003 and 2004 was 26-28 deg C and 28-29 deg C, respectively. The relative air humidity in 2003 and 2004 ranged from 60 to 70%. The higher stratification room temperature in 2004 induced the following: earlier bud break - seven days after grafting, earlier onset of callus formation - eight days after grafting, higher callus quality - 4.29 and higher grafting success - 83.4% at the end of the stratification process as compared to 2003 (bud break - nine days after grafting, onset of callus formation - ten days after grafting, callus quality - 3.47 and grafting success - 72.2%).
