Importance of livestock production inevitably raises the question of monitoring health and fertility in the herd of cows. High productivity implies a negative effect on fertility and there is a fight for supremacy between milk production and fertility. One of the ways to fight for better fertility in the cow herd is usage of hormones. The most common hormone applied in large animal reproduction is gonado – releasing hormone (GnRH), which belongs to a group of peptide hormones whose main task is to stimulate the secretion of follicule stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteolitic hormone (LH). In this way, GnRH stimulates ovarian activity leading to the growth of luteinizing follicules and corpus luteum. Prostaglandis have been used for a long time in the treatment of fertility problems. Their luteolitic and uterotonic effect was usedin the induction and synchronization of estrus and ovulation, treatment of endometritis and pyometra. Further indication for the use of prostaglandis is induction of labor, especially in an altered general health status of animals. Uterotonic effect of oxytocin was used to establish motility of miomemtrium in early puerperium and the evacuation of pathological content from uterus. It was also found that prostaglandins may be helpful in prevention of the retained placenta. The effect is very short (2-3 days after birth) and then its biological activity is reduced.
