Energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources have been on the rise, so the EU Directive 2009/28/EC has foreseen an increase in the share of renewable energy to 20% by 2020 in the total energy consumption. From technical aspect the potentials for the use of renewable energy sources (RES) are high in the Republic of Serbia and are estimated to be over 4.3 millions of tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) a year out of which 63% is obtained from biomass, 14% from solar energy, 14% from hydroenergy, 5% from wind energy and 4% from geothermal energy. According to the research it is of utmost importance to educate the people about the significant use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency, as well as to accredit the new study programs related to this field. Also, about 400 engineers would be in demand. New subjects on the renewable energy sources and energy efficiency should be introduced in high schools and faculties of academic and applied studies. The centers for renewable energy sources and energy efficiency should be established in Serbia in Novi Sad, Belgrade, Niš, Kragujevac, Novi Pazar and Kosovska Mitrovica, as well as the Association of these centers and which would cooperate with similar international institutions.
