In countries with a developed pig production, including Serbia, diarrhea during the neonatal period caused by ETEC strains is one of the most present and economically most significant diseases. Material for these investigations was sampled specifically from live/dead piglets that showed clinical or pathoanatomical changes indicating infection caused by E. coli originating from several pig farms in Serbia. Bacteriological examination of 183 samples of rectal swabs of newborn pigs and small intestins of dead pigs, from the 148 (80.87%) was isolated enteropathogenic E. coli. It was determined that 46.15% of E. coli strains belonged to the serogroup 0149, significantly less to the serogroups 08 and 0147 (16.48%), 0138 (14.28%) and 0157 (6.59%). Fimbrial adhesins were identified in 51, 64% strains of E. coli, the most common being F4 adhesin (80.85%), followed by F5 adhesin (8.51%) and F6 adhesin (6.38%), the simultaneous presence of both F4 and F6 adhesins was detected in 4.25% of the strains. In 66.67% of the strains the multiresistance to 3 and more antibiotics was detected; whereas the stressed resistance to tetracycline and ampyciline was found in 89.58% strains; a significantly less of 37.5% to ciprofloxacin, and the least of 4.17% to ceftriaxon. In the sera of experimentally vaccinated and revaccinated pregnant sows were found the titers of specific antibodies against E. coli 0149:F4 (K88) whose values ranged from 1:320 to 1:1280. The analysis of the obtained values of the titers of specific antibodies showed that there existed a statistically very significant increase in the titer (p is less than 0.01) between 0. and 20., as well as between 20. and 42. days, this being in correlation with the time of vaccination and revaccination.
