Antigenicity, toxicity and immunogenicity of Rabivet(R) vaccine for dogs

In this paper are presented the results of estimation of antigenicity (NIH test), toxicity and immunity (according to level of antirabies antibodies) of RABIVET(R) vaccine for digs (different ages and races of dogs). Impact of revaccination on immune response is estimated as well as transfer of passive antibodies to puppies originated from their vaccinated mothers. Twenty lots are produced so far (1997-2011) and antigenicity were in interval from 1.0 till 10.4 IU/ml (NIH test). All lots of vacines fulfil standards of minimum potency of 1.0 IU/ml. It is proved absence of toxicity of vaccine in laboratory conditions and on the field as well. In comparative trials of RABIVET(R) with similar vaccine produced by reputable companies, RABIVET(R) vaccine caused a little lower level of antirabies antibodies in average titer with same level of seroconversion. Race and size of dogs didn't have any influence of antirabies antibody titers. Revaccination cause very strong secondary immune response with seroconversion which lasts longer than 6 months. Puppies (75 days old from the same brood) produced lower level of antirabies antibodies after first vaccination (29 days after vaccination seroconversion was 83.3%) with significant individual differences. Because of already mentioned differences a lot of authors recommend revaccination. Transmission of passive antibodies from bitches to puppies exists and levels of antibodies in puppies are in direct proportions with antibody titer in bitches before partum. Our experiments confirmed that maternal antirabies antibodies in puppies are absent before days 70 of age.
