Resistance of Pasteurella multocida strains isolated from rabbits with respiratory infections and infections of internal organs

Pasteurella multocida is a well known cause of morbidity and mortality in rabbits. The predominant szndrome is upper respiratory disease or snuffles. Occassionally rabbots harbor chronic infections of internal tissues or organs, such as middle ears or lungs, without anz signs of rhinitis and are negative for Pasteurella multicida by nasal culture. In a survey for the strains of P. multicida present in domestic rabbits in Bulgaria, samples were obtained from commercial rabbitries and necropsy specimens. Sources of isolates were upper respiratory tract infections, localized bronchopneumonias, acute fibrinous pneumonias, nasal and conjuctiva samples and internal organs, of 89 samples obtained from internal organs 53 (59.5%) were Pasteurella multicida. Of 7 nasal samples 3 were Pasteurella multicida and of 4 conjuctiva sample 3 were Pasteurella multicida too. Most of isolates were susceptible to chloramphenicol (92.8%) and streptomycin (77.4%). Resistance to amoxicillin was 12.2%, to doxycycline 14.3%, to 11.9% and to enrofloxacin 14.8%.
