The aim of this work was to establish the presence of Nosema apis and Nosema cerana in honey bees using molecular diagnostic techniques, and their prevalence in Veterinary Specialist Institute Kraljevo (Serbia) and Veterinary Specialist Institute Niš (Serbia) epidemiological areas during the 2009-2011 period. The above areas have nine districts with 50 municipalities of the western and southern Serbia, which is an area of almost 30% of the state territory. Considering the previous research results on treatment and the presence of Nosema cerana in European honey bees, we can conclude that Nosema cerana has not recently entered the territory of Serbia and Europe but is already present in honey bee colonies for several years. Honey bee nosemosis, caused by the microsporidian fungus Nosema cerana, is present in acute and chronic form in areas with different climate, all localities and all seasons. Preventive measures, good manufacturing and hygiene practices, regular clinical and laboratory examinations or undertaking statutory measures can help prevent spreading the disease to uninfected honeybee colonies.
