Nitrogen and phosphorus application increased the dry matter yields and the N and P uptake by plants at early stages of vegetation (the 4th leaf). Phosphorus application increased the dry matter yields by the later growth phases, as well (10th leaf). Nitrogen fertilisation also increased the dry matter yield of sunflower by the end of vegetation, while the difference in the dry matter yields between the N and P fertilised variants levelled off by end of the vegetation. Nitrogen application significantly increased the yield of achenes, the diameter of inflorescence, the weight of thousand seeds, its oil content and oil production. The phosphorus application affected significantly just the weight of thousand seeds in two of the three years. The fatty acids content was not significantly affected by either nitrogen or phosphorus. However, the N application increased the oleic acid (18:1) content and it decreased the linoleic acid (18:2) content in the seeds. There was no significant effect of the phosphorus application on the fatty acids concentrations in the sunflower achenes.
