Peppermint tetraploid sterile natural hybrid of Mentha aquatica L. and Mentha spicata L. is cultivated for commercial production of essential oil, dry leaves, as well as of the fresh herb. Peppermint essential oil is a major aromatic agent used extensively in chewing gum, toothpaste, mouth washes, Pharmaceuticals, confectionary and aromatherapy products. Significant work on peppermint oil has been carried out in different parts of the world and it was found that the chemical composition is influenced by various factors, such as geographical location, environmental conditions, plant ontogenesis and agro climatic requirements of the crops. In the present work the production of biomass, yield and the composition of essential oil of field-cultivated peppermint was studied in relation to environmental conditions.
