Strengthening efforts to reduce poverty

This paper notes that despite progress in recent decades, the number of people living in poverty has grown. It goes on to reflect on the particularly difficult experience of the 1980s and the uncertain prospects for the future, which necessitate special measures to address the problems of the poor. It then describes how the World Bank is strengthening its support for developing countries' efforts to ensure that development reaches the poor. This support asissts borrowers' overall efforts to stimulate economic growth and to address systemic poverty directly, and is also being extended in association with adjustment programs to mitigate the possible negative impact of the programs on some of the poor.
