The world poultry industry

This report is the first in a series to be pubished by the IFC Agribusiness Department. The series will comprise sectoral presentations of industry trends with specific emphasis on developing countries. This first in the series focuses on the poultry industry, and its expansion as developing countries become viable competitors in the global market. Poultry meat consumption has been growing at an exceptional rate over the last decade, spurred by its nutritional value and price relative to other meats. The evolution of the poultry market in recent years epitomizes the emergence of developing countries as global competitors in the agribusiness sector. Dominated by developing countries' exporters a few years ago, the world market today is largely shared by developing countries, some of which may be highly competitive for years to come. The authors examine the present and growing demand for poultry, and the investment which should add to the growth of the industry.
