Tunisia - Tunis-La Goulette Port Project
Kopp, Raymond J.
The Tunis-La Goulette Port Project for Tunisia will assist in financing improvements and extensions at the La Goulette part of the Tunis-La Goulette port system. Tunis is the capital city of Tunisia and the principal commercial center of the country. The port serves an area with 2.2 million inhabitants or more than 50 percent of the country's total population. It is also the principal port for general cargo. During the past few years, it has handled 75 percent of all imports, 40 percent of all exports, and 50 percent of the total traffic in Tunisia. As a result, the port of Tunis has become seriously congested and unable to handle increases in general cargo traffic. The project will alleviate this situation by developing and extending the port of La Goulette in order to divert a considerable portion of the general traffic now being handled at Tunis. Its main components are: 1) provision of cargo facilities at the existing quay; 2) construction of two additional berths; 3) addition of transit sheds, warehouses, passenger terminals, working areas, and office buildings to the berths; 4) relocation of road access to the port; and 5) relocation of a breakwater. These additions will enable the present quays at La Goulette to be used to full capacity for general cargo and relieve the present congestion and shipping restrictions at the port of Tunis.
