Exotic virus diseases of ruminants, 2: Rift valley fever

Rift valley fever causes disease in ruminants and man. The disease in man is characterized by influenza-like symptoms. In animals the predominant sign is the high abortion rate in pregnant animals which reaches 100 percent in pregnant ewes. The disease is confined to the African continent, however, recent epidemics in Egypt indicate a possible extension of the disease towards the Near East and Southern Europe. Transmission of the virus is mostly achieved via blood sucking insects but the possibility of airborne transmission via infectious aerosols has been documented. The epidemiological characteristics are discussed and a short review of the disease and its pathology in ruminants is given
