Dairy production demonstration farm project: a commercial and training unit

The document presents as a background that the amount of milk that is produced in Suriname scarcely covers forty percent of the population demand. Powder milk, cheese and any type of milk by-products have been imported by the Government in order to cover this production deficit. The Ministry of Agriculture and the IICA are carrying out some joint actions to improve the Livestock sub-sector. Within these actions the Ministry has requested from IICA, based on IICA-Guyana experience, to design and prepare a project for the establishment of a Commercial and Training Dairy Demonstration Farm. The St. Stanislaus Dairy Demonstration Farm that was established, has been the center for the training of farmers and technicians as well as the mean of transfering the appropriate technology for farmers. As specific objectives: 1) to promote and implement technologies and practices to increase milk production and productivity; 2) to use this Dairy Production Unit as a center to offer training activities for students, farmers, farm and technical personnel; 3) to use this unit as an economic profitable production farm, as an example to farmers, students and technicians. Then, it is analized the following: a) project characteristics; b) project phases; c) goals; d) farm establishment costs; e) an economic analysis of the project. Finally, six annexes are included
