In breeding of sunflower Helianthus annuus L., which is one of the main oil seed crops in the world, the heterosis effect is mainly used. A prerequisite for successful heterosis breeding is the development of parental lines with high combining ability. This investigation was carried out during 2008 – 2009 at Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute DAI, General Toshevo. The study involved 9 lines and 20 hybrid combinations obtained through crosses between the lines. The lines were developed at DAI, four of them being cytoplasmic male sterile CMS lines, and five – doubled haploid fertility restorer lines. The evaluation of the general GCA and specific SCA combining ability of the parental lines included the traits 1000 seed weight, oil and protein content in seed. Among the investigated cms lines, 217 А and 6134 А had highest GCA by all indices, and among the fertility restorer lines this was line R 01 Х10 97. Highest SCA with regard to the trait 1000 seed weight was demonstrated by lines 217 А and R 01 Х10 97, and with regard to the index oil content in seed – lines 217 А and R01X471/7. Crosses 6134А х R01X471/7, 217 А х R03H325/9, 217 А х R01X1097, 6134А х R02L45/13 and 1676 А х R02L45/13 are recommended for further breeding work toward higher content of protein in seed. The heritability models of the investigated traits were additive dominant toward the parent with the higher values of the studied indices.
