On the basis of the analysis of the development of the sectors sheep breeding and goat breeding and the related breeding activities can be concluded that during the transition period a new agrarian reform has beenimplemented, as sheep breeding has been entirely transferred to private farms. In the course of the reform the number of sheep has dropped dramatically and the uses of breeds have undergo radical changes. During the transition period to market economics sheep breeding has suffered the most dramatic change in comparison with the other livestock sectors. The number of sheep has decreased with more than 60 % and in 2000 has fallen to 2.286.406. Till the beginning of 2009 the breeding activities in the country have been mainly performed by the Executive Agency for Selection and Reproduction in Animal Breeding and after that the activities have entirely passed to breeding organizations, controlled by the Executive Agency. At present the breeding activities in sheep and goat breeding are performed by 17 breeding organizations comprising 163.180 sheep and goats, respectively in sheep breeding – 15 breeding organizations with 154.486 sheep and in goat breeding – 2 breeding organizations and 8.694 goats. Main target of the sheep and goat pedigree breeding activities is the maintenance and the improvement of the existing breeds and establishment of new ones. On this bases a program for conservation of the genetic resources in sheep breeding and preservation of the threatened with extinction autochthonous breeds is developed.
