Physiological parameters and green grain yield of cowpea under water deficit

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o índice de área foliar, o teor de clorofila total e o potencial de água na folha, relacionando-os com a produtividade de grãos verdes em feijão-caupi (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) sob diferentes lâminas de irrigação. Conduziu-se o experimento na Embrapa Meio-Norte, em Teresina, Piauí, em um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo Eutrófico, no período de setembro a novembro de 2009, no qual se utilizaram as cultivares BRS Guariba e BRS Paraguaçu. Cinco lâminas de irrigação foram aplicadas com base em frações da evapotranspiração de referência (25, 50, 75, 100 e 125% ETo). Usou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições e parcelas subdivididas. O índice de área foliar apresentou efeito linear decrescente para a menor lâmina e quadrático para as demais. Os teores de clorofila total apresentaram efeito quadrático. Ocorreu uma redução média de 13,8 e 18,8% para os teores de clorofila total, 116% para o potencial de água na folha e 70% para a produtividade de grãos verdes, entre a menor e a maior lâmina, para as cultivares BRS Guariba e BRS Paraguaçu, respectivamente. A produtividade de grãos verdes se correlaciona positivamente com o potencial de água na folha, o índice de área foliar e o teor de clorofila total.

English. The objective of this study was to evaluate the leaf area, total chlorophyll content and leaf water potential, correlating them with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) yield, under different water depths. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Meio-Norte, in Teresina, PI, Brazil, from September to November 2009. The BRS Guariba and BRS Paraguaçu cultivars were used. Five irrigation depths based on fractions of reference evapotranspiration (25, 50, 75, 100 and 125% ETo) were applied. A randomized block design in split plots was used with four replications. The leaf area index showed decreasing linear effect for the lowest depth of irrigation and quadratic for the other depths. The chlorophyll levels showed a quadratic effect. There was an average reduction of 13.8 and 18.8% for the total concentration of chlorophyll, 116% for the leaf water potential, 70% for yield green grain, between the lowest and highest blade for BRS and Guariba BRS Paraguaçu, respectively. The yield of green grain is positively correlated with leaf water potential, leaf area index and total chlorophyll content.
