USE OF ENRICHED SUGAR CANE MOLASSES TO REPLACE MAIZE IN DIETS FOR WEANED PIGS | UTILIZACION DE MIELES ENRIQUECIDAS DE CAÑA DE AZUCAR EN SUSTITUCION DEL MAIZ EN LA ALIMENTACION DE CERDOS AL DESTETE

Se utilizaron 36 cerdos machos castrados YL x D de 8.0 kg de peso vivo y destetados a los 35 días de edad distribuidos en tres tratamientos en un diseño de bloques al azar para estudiar el efecto sobre el comportamiento animal de la sustitución del maíz de la dieta por mieles rica o del tipo B de caña de azúcar. La fuente proteica utilizada fue la levadura torula. Las concentraciones de proteína bruta dietética (BS) fueron de 18.6% para el maíz y del 15.8% para las mieles. Los cerditos se alimentaron ad libitum y se alojaron individualmente. Los consumos de materia seca (kg/día) y energía bruta (Mj/día) en las dietas con miel rica o B fueron superiores (P0.001 y P0.05, respectivamente) a la de maíz: 1.468 y 23.16; 1.480 y 23.21 y 1.239 y 22.32 respectivamente. Los consumos de proteína bruta (g/día) no difirieron entre tratamientos: 226; 226 y 229. Las ganancias de peso (g/día) y el peso final (kg) no difirieron entre el maíz y la miel rica: 498 y 37.4; 482 y 36.5, pero se obtuvo una disminución de estas medidas (P0.01) en la miel B 437 y 33.9 . Las conversiones alimentarias (kg MS/kg ganancia) y energéticas (Mj/kg ganancia) difirieron (P0.001) entre tratamientos: 2.49 y 44.94; 3.07 y 48.48; 3.41 y 53.51, respectivamente. Las conversiones proteicas (kg PB/kg ganancia) para los tratamientos de maíz y miel rica no difirieron: 0.45 y 0.47, aunque empeoró (P0.01) para la miel B: 0.53. No se presentaron diarreas en los cerditos ni casos de muerte, al igual que no se desecharon animales. Se considera que las dietas basadas en mieles enriquecidas de caña de azúcar constituyen una opción adecuada para ser suministradas a los cerdos a partir del destete en países del trópico, y que en términos de eficiencia, éstas se aproximan más a las dietas de cereales cuanto mayor sea el contenido de azúcares de la miel. No obstante, se recomienda el realizar estudios en los que se utilicen escalas de alimentación restringidas que permitan hacer un uso más eficiente de los nutrientes de estas dietas.

Thirty-six Yorkshire, Landrace x Duroc castrated male pigs weaned at 35 days of age and 8.0 kg average live weight were distributed in three treatments according to a random block design to study the effect of maize meal substitution by high-test or type B sugar cane molasses on animal performance. Torula yeast was used as the only protein source. Dietary protein contents (DB) were 18.6% for maize and 15.8% for molasses. The piglets were housed to individual cages and fed ad libitum. Feed (kg DM/day) and gross energy intakes (Mj/day) were higher in high-test and B molasses (P0.001 and P0.05 respectively) in comparison with maize diet: 1.468 and 23.16; 1.480 and 23.21 and 1.239 and 22.32 respectively. No significant differences among treatments were found in crude protein intake (g/day): 226; 226 and 229. The weight gains (g/day) and the final weights (kg) did not differ between treatments: 498 and 37.4; 482 and 36.5 while the values of these indices were lesser (P0.01) in type B molasses treatment: 437 and 33.9 . Feed conversions (kg DM/kg gain) and energy conversions (Mj/kg gain) were different (P0.001) among treatments: 2.49 and 44.94; 3.07 and 48.48; 3.41 and 53.51 respectively. Protein conversions (kg protein/kg gain) were similar in maize and high-test molasses diets: 0.45 and0.47, although this measurement was affected (P0.01) in type B molasses diet: 0.53. During the experiment no diarrhea or deaths were observed. It is considered that diets based on enriched sugar cane molasses for weaned pigs are an adequate alternative to be used in tropical countries and that they are more similar to cereal diets when the sugar content in the molasses is greater. Nevertheless, it is recommended to conduct experiments with restricted feeding in search of a higher nutrient efficiency of this diets.
