IDENTIFICACIÓN DE ASPECTOS EPIDEMIOLÓGICOS RELACIONADOS CON LA EXPRESIÓN DE RESISTENCIA DE LA PAPA (Solanum tuberosum) PARA LAS POBLACIONES DE Phytophthora infestans PREDOMINANTES EN TRES LOCALIDADES DE LA SIERRA ECUATORIANA

La resistencia cuantitativa al “Tizón tardío” (Phytophthora infestans) es un objetivo de mejoramiento de papa en el INIAP; de allí que es necesario conocer los factores epidemiológicos asociados con su expresión. Se estudiaron diferentes arreglos de genotipos, en tamaños diferentes de parcela y las poblaciones del patógeno de las provincias de Pichincha, Carchi y Cotopaxi. La interferencia entre parcelas no afectó la selección de resistencia cuantitativa. En tamaños grandes de parcela (cuatro surcos), hubo más enfermedad que en tamaños pequeños (dos surcos) y cuando los genotipos se sembraron en mezclas, la severidad promedio fue menor que cuando se sembraron individualmente; sugiriendo que los genes mayores en la mezcla contribuyen al control de la enfermedad cuando interactúan con la resistencia cuantitativa. En los clones 97-1-10, 98-11-6, 99-38-5 y las variedades I-Fripapa y Brenda, con genes mayores, se sobrestimó la resistencia cuantitativa, en estos materiales no se expresó la población avirulenta del patógeno. La variedad Brenda en Cotopaxi fue más resistente que 97-1-10; mientras que, en Pichincha sucedió lo contrario, ya que la mayor parte de la población de P. infestans en Cotopaxi fue avirulenta para el gen de resistencia que posee Brenda y en Pichincha la población avirulenta para este gen fue menor. One of the objectives of the INIAP’s potato improvement program is to find quantitative resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans), and thus, studying the epidemiological factors associated with its expression is fundamental. Different potato genotype arrays were studied varying the plot size and the pathogen populations from Pichincha, Carchi and Cotopaxi. The interplot interference did not affect the selection of quantitative resistance. More disease was present in greater plots (four furrows) than in small plots (two furrous) and when genotype mixtures were planted the average disease severity was reduced compared to planting individual genotypes. This suggests that major genes in the mixture contribute to the disease control when they interact with quantitative resistance. Quantitative resistance was over estimated on clones 97-1-10, 98-11-6, 99-38-5 and varieties I-Fripapa and Brenda whichpossess major genes; pathogen avirulent population did not express in these genotypes. Brenda variety was more resistant than 97-1-10 in Cotopaxi, whereas in Pichincha the contrary was true, because, most of the P. infestans population was avirulent for Brenda’s resistance gene in Cotopaxi, but in Pichincha, the pathogen avirulent population for this gene was lower.
