Genetic resource policies: what is diversity worth to farmers?

This set of six briefings sheds light on questions regarding who maintains diversity, where it is maintained, and how farmers value this diversity as societies and economies change. These briefs present syntheses and synopses of research conducted by IFPRI’s Environment and Production Technology Division along with multiple collaborators. They highlight some of the important methodological aspects of current work on valuing generic resources on farms, and the factors that influence the determinants of crop genetic diversity.The six briefs in this collection cover:<B>on-farm genetic resources and economic change:</B>: outlines the complex patterns of local taxonomies and how detailed knowledge of local production systems and their surrounding environment is needed for the development of these taxonomies<B>traits and taxonomies – building blocks for understanding diversity:</B> provides additional discussion on the construction of crop taxonomies and models that incorporate crop attributes<B>crop diversity and economic change:</B> outlines several studies that identify the role of crop diversity in situations of economic change, particularly those related to processes of market integration<B>conservation objectives and policy trade-offs:</B> summarises research that deals particularly with the trade-offs between conservation and policy objectives<B>seeds, markets, and information:</B> describes studies that focus on seed-related institutions and their impact on the crop diversity that is available to farmers.<B>targeting conservation policy:</B> provides a reprise of the variables that serve as potential entry points for conservation-related interventions or policy development.
