Evaluation and Individual Selection in Genetics Resources of Small millets
2010

Regarding the poor performance of small millet in Iran and the whole world, it is important to improve varieties with higher yielding potential than the mean grain and forage yield of this crop at global level. In order to achieve this goal, 400 samples of two spices of small millet (Common millet and Foxtail millet) from last cycle of small millet breeding that collected from all over the country were evaluated in an Augment Designe with three check varieties at Karaj Research Station in 2008-2010. The experimental area was 1500m2 and the seeds of each population was planted in one, 1m- rows with a 60 cm spacing at the depth of 2-3 cm. Standard caltural practices were applied and vegatative and reproductive characters were recorded during the growing season. At first year 146 plants from foxtail millet species and 146 plants from common millet species were selected(Individual selection )and their panicles were covered by paper bags to prevent brid damage. Selected panicules were threshed and screened during fall and winter. In second yeare 292 selected rows were evaluated in an a designe without replication. Vegatative and reproductive characters like plant hight , panicle length, maturity period, days to flowerig and toleranc to lodging of 292 samples of common foxtail millet were recorded during the growing season. At the end of second year 20 sample of common millet contain no. 5-7-11-14-20-23-25-30-33-38-55-60-67-86-98-103-109-128-and 20 sample of foxtail millet contain No.1-9-19-33-35-41-49-50-52-53-55-63-66-73-83-84-85-104-107 were selected and their panicle were covered by paper bags and stored for future small millet breeding program. .
