The colostral IgA level, but not the serum neutralization titer, induced by immunization against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus is correlated with protection of new born piglets against virulent PEDV challenge

To evaluate the relevance of IgA antibodies in PEDV screening, the PED IgA titers in colostrum samples obtained from 977 oral or IM-vaccinated sows in Korea were examined using indirect ELISA. The survival rates of piglets born from the oral administered group were significantly higher than those of the IM group after virulent virus challenge (87.5% vs 40%). Among the IgG, IgA, and SN titers evaluated, only the IgA titers were significantly different between the two groups. A comparison of the IgA and SN titers disclosed no specific correlation between these two parameters. These results suggest that the SN titer is not a valid indicator of protection against PEDV infection. Rather, the IgA concentration in the colostrum provides a better marker of protection and survival rate after virulent PEDV challenge.
