Effect of foliar spray of varying nitrogen levels on mature tea yield under different agroecological conditions

A study was conducted at National Tea Research Institute (NTRI), Shinkiari, Mansehra, Pakistan during 2009-10 to evaluate the impact of different levels of nitrogen (ammonium sulphate) applied as foliar spray on yield of matured tea bushes. The matured tea gardens were selected at three locations viz. NTRI, farmer's fields in tehsil Oghi (district Mansehra) and Kuza Banda (district Battagram). Basal doses of P and K were applied in the form of di-ammonium phosphate and sulphate of potash, respectively @ 30 kg per acre each while N was applied in the form of ammonium sulphate as foliar spray in three split doses. The experiment was conducted in RCBD with split plot arrangements replicated thrice. Five levels of nitrogen (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/acre) were studied. It was observed that 30 to 120 kg per acre nitrogen level increased fresh leaves yield (1808.66 to 2872.58 kg/acre), made tea yield (362.66 to 574.58 kg/acre) and shoot growth (35.502 to 48.58 cm). Among locations, NTRI gave significantly better results. The interaction between treatments and locations was highly significant for fresh leaves yield and made tea production but non-significant for shoot length.
