The basic principles in the field of food and feed are defined by Regulation (EC) of the European Parliament and of the Council no. 178 of 28 January 2002, which also includes procedures in the area of food safety. Serbia’s enactment of the Law on Food Safety “Sl.Gl.RS” No. 41/2009) and its coming into effect in June 2009, have set general requirements for food safety and animal feed as well as the duties and responsibilities of food and feed business operators, the system of rapid informing and alarming, emergency and managing crisis situations, hygiene and quality of food and feed. The objective of this law is to ensure a high level of protection of human life and health and the protection of consumers’ interests, including the principle of good faith in the food trade, taking into account where possible protection of animal health and welfare, and plant health and environmental protection.
