Selective control of some silicate algae in aquaculture using ecological methods

Algae that co-exist in aquacultural fish production systems are of great importance, since they affect the characteristics that describe the quality of water, such as color, smell, taste, turbidity and dissolved oxygen, both directly, performing their vital activities in the water and indirectly by reducing the effects of water quality maintenance systems, the latter particularly characteristic for diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), which are deposited on filters. Exploring into nonpesticide, ecological methods of growth control, algal cultures were exposed to different extremely low frequency (ELF) electro-magnetic fields (EMFs). The results identify certain parts of the electro-magnetic spectrum that caused significant decrease of algal population tested.
