Effect of plant spacing on growth and yield of sweet potato

Presently, little is known of the responses of field-grown sweet potato to difference in plant spacing. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different 4 spacing patterns on growth and yield of sweet potato. The experiment was conducted at Faculty of Agricultural Technology, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, during February to June, 2010. A split plot in randomized complete block design with three replications was word. Main plot were 6 sweet potato cultivars, (Thorpheug, Kai, Japan, China, Pichit 101 and Pichit 1665) and 4 spacing patterns (30*50, 50*50, 30*100 and 50*100 cm., respectively) were as subplot. The results showed that growth, yield and total dry weight of China cultivar were the highest and followed by Japan, Kai, Pichit 101 and Pichit 1665, respectively where as Thorpheug cultivar gave the lowest. The increasing plant spacing increasing vine, leaf, root and total dry weight per plant. Fresh and dry storage root weight yield (kg/rai) of the narrowest plant spacing (30*50 cm.) gave the highest while the widest plant spacing (50*100 cm.) gave the lowest. However, there were no interaction between sweet potato cultivars and plant spacings.
