Selection of pumpkin lines (Cucurbita sp.) for high oil seed

Objective of this study was to select among pumpkin varieties, both native and foreign, those with seeds having a high content of oil. The inbred line was selected from 2 crops during October 2009 to October 2010 in Lampang Province. The varieties with the highest seed and oil potential were then bred to produce hybrids. The 1,144 breeding lines were classified and the 208 lines producing seeds of more than a weight of 12g per 100 seeds were selected. Of these, 144 lines produced an oil yield range of 27 percent to 35 percent (dry weight). Furthermore, thirty-three of the S2 to S6 lines gave yields of more than 21 kg oil per rai and 57 kg of seed per rai. These yields compared favorably with yields from foreign varieties that have been adapted to Thailand's environment. Statistical analysis revealed that the yield of oil per rai was positively influenced by seed and fruit yield per rai, oil content, seed weight per fruit and per plant, and fruit weight.
