Effects of brewer's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) supplementary diet on growth performance and immune response in nile tilapia

This study was conducted to determine the use of commercial live Brewer's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) supplemented in feed in order to increase feed efficiency and immune responses of nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus Linn.). The completely randomized design (CRD) was applied. The experiment was divided into 5 treatments with 3 replication each including brewer's yeast supplement in diets containing 0, 1, 2.5, 5 and 10 g yeast/kg diet. Initial weight ranged 71.5-74.0 g/fish. The study period was 90 days. The results showed that the highest average increased weight, average final weight and average daily gain (ADG) were tilapia fed with brewer's yeast 1 g yeast/kg diet (P GT 0.05). Red blood cells and phagocytosis activity (percent) in nile tilapia were highest increased in fish fed with brewer's yeast 5 g yeast/kg diet (P GT 0.05) These result indicate that brewer's yeast supplement is promising as an alternative for tilapia aquaculture, and the optimum level of brewer's yeast supplement is about 1 g yeast/kg diet.
