Mechanisms of Antimutagenic Activity of Plant Extracts | Механизми на антимутагенната активност на растителните извлеци

There are many plant species that are an inexhaustible source of biologically active substances whose effects on human health and genetic material has not been extensively studied. They work through a wide range of mechanisms, due to their diverse chemical substances. Possible mechanisms for the inhibition of the mutagenesis of plant products are presented in the article. In complex and crude plant extracts, the observed effects of the could be explained by the multitude of chemically reactive groups and substances, which are formed during treatment and administration of the extract, these chemical compounds can act as non-specific redox agents, scavengers of free radicals or as ligands for binding of the toxic substances. The net effect apparently results from interactions between components and their individual and overall interaction with toxic substances. The specificity and efficiency of this type of interaction is also affected by physiological factors affecting the plant and process which is necessary for the preparation and application of the extract. Using pharmacologically active plants should take into account both positive and potential side effects. The particular dosage form the agent must be carefully considered.
