Development and Environmental Assessment of Phytoplankton in Varna Lake | Развитие и екологична оценка на фитопланктона във Варненско езеро
2014
Gerdzhikov, D., Institute of Fish Resources, Varna (Bulgaria)
Varna Lake is the largest one along the Bulgarian coast and important for the biodiversity conservation of the coastal terrestrial and marine habitats within the region of Varna Municipality. In 2010, were collected, processed and analyzed 18 pcs. quantitative phytoplankton samples. The objective of this article is by analyzing the contemporary phytoplankton data and on the basis of previous ones to carry out an ecological assessment of phytoplankton coenosis in 2010. The findings support that in the last 20 years period since 1991 in Varna Lake a tendency occurs toward reducing the number of bloom phytoplankton species and quantitative values that corresponds to improvement of the environmental situation. Meanwhile the phytoplankton community is developing under eutrophic conditions and is therefore susceptible to anthropogenic impact.
