Effect of ethanol on synthesis of extracellular and cell-bound catalase by Penicillium piceum BIM F-371 D was studied. It was found that fungal culture subjected to ethanol stress resulted in 4.8 – fold increase of extracellular catalase accumulation, 2.2 – fold increase of extracellular protein content, 6.9 – fold higher specific enzyme activity. It was accompanied by increase accumulation of cell-bound catalase and protein – 1.9 and 1.3 times respectively and enhanced specific activity of the enzyme – 1.7 times. I was shown that the ratio of extracellular and cell-bound catalase exposed to ethanol stress equal 2:1 while on ethanol-free media it constituted 1:6. It was established that ethanol or glycerol may be used as conservation agents for the storage of enzyme preparation. It is presumed that increases level of catalase production by Penicillium piceum BIM F-371 D and shift in ratio of extracellular and cell-bound catalase appears to serve as a part of the mechanism providing for adaptation of the fungus to ethanol stress. Ethanol may be applied as effector of catalase synthesis in Penicillium piceum BIM F-371 D.
