La palomilla del tomate (Tuta absoluta): una plaga que se debe conocer en Cuba

La palomilla del tomate (Tuta absoluta Meyrick) es un microlepidóptero ampliamente difundido en el mundo, capaz de provocar daños económicos hasta del 100 por ciento en el cultivo del tomate, sobre todo en países de clima tropical. Es hospedero de un amplio grupo de especies pertenecientes a las solanáceas y otras familias, lo cual favorece su distribución y permanencia en las áreas agrícolas. Su ciclo biológico se reduce a solo veinte días en condiciones de altas temperaturas. Los daños que causa en las hojas son del tipo de los minadores y puede dañar frutos y tallos en cualquier etapa del cultivo. En la actualidad su control se basa en el manejo integrado, donde se tiene en cuenta entre otros los métodos físicos, biológicos y químicos. La propagación entre países se propicia con los intercambios comerciales. Dada la creciente comercialización entre Cuba y regiones del continente americano donde se encuentra ampliamente distribuida esta importante plaga, el objetivo de este trabajo es realizar un análisis de la información disponible sobre la influencia de Tuta absoluta en el cultivo del tomate, para la preparación de técnicos y profesionales en el reconocimiento y control de esta importante plaga en caso de introducción en el país.

English. Tomato moth (Tuta absoluta Meyrick ) is a widely microlepidopter in the world, capable of causing economic damage up to 100 percent in tomato crop, especially in tropical countries. It is host to a large group of species belonging to Solanaceae and other families, which favors its distribution and retention in agricultural areas. Its life cycle is reduced to only 20 days in high temperature conditions. The damage caused in the leaves is of the miners and can damage the fruits and stems at any stage of the crop. Currently the control is based on the integrated management, which takes into account, among other physical methods, biological and chemical. The spread between countries is conducive to trade. Given the growing trade between Cuba and the America regions where this important pest is widely distributed, the aim of this paper is to analyze the information available on the influence of Tuta absoluta in tomato cultivation, for preparing technics and professionals in the recognition and control of this important pest when entering the country.
