Barley varieties registered in the Czech Republic in 2013

In 2013, the malting varieties of spring barley Arthur, Danielle, Laudis 550, Olympic, Petrus, Shuffle, Vendela, and Zhana were registered in the Czech Republic. The highest extract contents were exhibited by the varieties Olympic (83.3%) and Danielle (83.6%). All the varieties under study exhibited very good to optimal level of proteolytic and amylolytic modification. The highest level of apparent final attenuation was found in the variety Danielle (82.3%). Despite very good to optimal modification of cell walls (85-94%), the varieties Zhana, Petrus, and Shuffle exhibited increased beta-glucan contents in sweet wort (211-250 mg/L). The varieties Laudis 550, Zhana, Petrus,and Vendela were recommended for production of beer with the protected geographical indication "Ceske pivo" (Czech Beer). In autumn 2012, non-malting varieties of two-row winter barley Leopard and varieties of six-row winter barley Antonella, Saturn, Titus and Travira were registered. In spring 2013, a six-row non-malting hybrid variety Hobbit was registered.
