Soil "free" amino acids have been studied for a number of decades, and research has focused on elucidating their importance in the direct plant nutrition. Different approaches are considered here including "free" amino acids versus mineral nitrogen availability, plant preference for N-forms, competition between plants and microorganisms and the proportion of amino acids taken up directly by plants utilizing single- (13C or 14C) or dual-labeling (13C and 15N). The diamino amino acid, cystine, is found in relatively high concentrations in soil, but has not been included into these studies and knowledge on the ability of plants to directly uptake cystine is currently missing. For a better understanding of the role of amino acids in direct plant nutrition we suggest including cystine into these studies.
