Economics of productions capacity in the farms of dates in Libya

The yield of date production in Lybia has been deteriorated recently. Therefore, the main objectives of the study are: (i) determination of the factors affecting date production in the farm production scales, (ii) study the date production costs structure in the selected scales, (iii) identify the optimal and profit-maximaizing production scales. The crop budget technique and the average production costs functions have been used to accomplish the previous objectives. The main results can be summarized as follows: (i) there is inverse relationship between the cultivated area of palm trees and the average costs per date unit, i.e., when the cultivated area of palm trees increases the average costs per date unit decreases, (ii) the average production costs per hectare of date in the first site (Wedan) is high because of the high levels of irrigation, harvesting and packaging costs. (iii) The four studied production scales had not achieved the production levels that maximaiz the profits because the utilization of farm inputs is not quite efficient. Consequently, the foregone net profits as estimated at 2399 Dinar/hectare in the first farm scale, 150 Dinar/hectare in the second farm scale, 1337 Dinar/hectare in the third farm scale and 76 Dinar/hectare in the fourth farm scale.
