Effect of intercropping flax in different seeding rates in fields of sugar beet under nitrogen fertilization levels on yield, quality and land use efficiency attributes

This investigation was conducted for two successive seasons (2009/ 2010 and 2010/2011) ýat Kafr El-Hamam Agric. Res. Station, El-Sharkia Governorate. This study aimed to find ýout the possibility of having an extra yield from flax when intercropped in fields of sugar ýbeet without disturbing its normal plant population (35000 plants/fed) using three flax ýseeding rates (20, 40 and 60 kg / fed) and two solid culture of both crops under four ýnitrogen fertilization levels (65, 80, 95 and 110 kg N/fed). Flax was intercropped in rows ýon the top of wide spaced sugar beet ridges (120 cm) where the main crop was planted on ýboth sides of these ridges. The effect of these treatments was traced on yield and its ýattributes of both components crops and their quality. The results indicated that ýintercropping flax at any seeding rate decreased the growth and hence the yield of sugar ýbeet. This decrease was almost proportional to the sown proportion of flax where in all ýcases the intercropped yield and all of its attributes were lower than the solid planting of ýeither sugar beet or flax. Application of 95kgN/fed caused significant increases for most ýstudied characters of both crops. However, the land use efficiency, on absolute or time ýbasis as expressed in land equivalent ratio (LER) or area time equivalent ratio (ATER) ýwas increased when values of 1.56 and 1.44 were obtained in respective order due to ýintercropping flax using seed rate of 40 kg /fed. Yield analysis indicated that sugar beet ýroot diameter had the highest contribution to root yield/fed. Flax seed index followed by ýthe number of capsules/plant recorded the highest contribution to seed yield/fed., whereas ýfiber length and technical length had this contribution to the fiber yield/fed.ý
