Dry matter yield, photosynthetic pigments and mineral content as suitable selection criterion for the salt tolerance of four broad bean cultivars differing in their salt tolerance

A considerable variation in the salt tolerance among the four studied broad bean cultivars has been observed. This variation was also revealed among the roots and shoots of each cultivar. The data of dry matter yield recommended these differences. of special interest, the cv. G 843 tolerated salt without any deleterious effect even at the highest salinity level used, whereas the cv. G 3 beside its sensitivity to salt stress, plants of the cultivar died beyond 160 mM NaCI. Additionally the differences in the pattern of photosynthetically active pigments went more or .less parallel to that reported in growth criteria among the four tested broad bean cultivars. Thus the cultivar G 843 was the superior where the concentration of these photosynthetic pigments remained more or less unchanged even at the higher salinity level used. Moreover pigments increased up to 80 mM NaCI. On the other hand the cultivar G3 and to some extent Sakhal were the drastically affected cultivars by NaCI salinity. The cv. G716 was intermediate. Also the salt tolerance of cv. G 843 was judged by the higher K+/Na+ ratio than the salt sensitive cv. G 3, which might used as a suitable selection criterion for the salt tolerance of these broad bean cultivars .
