Virtual Open Access Agriculture & Aquaculture Repository: Sharing Scientific and Scholarly Research related to Agriculture, Food, and Environment (VOA3R) is a 3-year European project launched in June 2010 and funded by the European Commission under the seventh framework ICT Policy Support Program. It brings together 14 organizations from 10 European countries and 3 collaborators from external organizations. The VOA3R platform will integrate existing open access repositories as well as digital libraries, archives and other publication systems by providing advanced search interfaces that include the specifics aspects of research work (methods, variables, measures, instruments, techniques, etc.) that are specific of the particular domain. The most important aim of this effort is to improve sharing scientific and open access research related to Agriculture, Food, Aquaculture and Environment. The VOA3R is dedicated to providing a community oriented platform based on social networking, micro-blogging and social bookmarking. A target group of users of this platform are categorized in the following: Researchers/academics, Practitioners and Students (can be considered a subset of the needs of the other categories). Researchers are the main target user group and the service will provide them with a community oriented interaction place supporting information seeking tasks in which they will be able to express their needs precisely using elements and criteria specific to their research work and methods. Other users can be managers of enterprises, state administration, local self-government or food consumers. The technology developed will itself become open source, so that the model of the service can be adopted by enterprises (including SMEs) or other institutions as a value-added, community-oriented model for open access content.
