Final report of the research project: Evaluation of relative infection to blue mold in a number of apple cultivars

Penicillium expansum is one of the most important postharvest decay agents of fruit, especilly apple, worldwide. Evaluating relative resistance of a number of commercial and local apple cultivars and genotypes to blue mold was the purpose of this study. Also, any correlation between decay scueptibility and pomological traits was investigated. For this purpose, 20 and 43 apple cultivars were evaluated in two consecutive years. The fungal isolates were isolated from decayed apple fruits and a conidial suspension prepared from the most pathogenic isolate was used as inoculum. For inoculation, two pores was made in the apical site of fruits and inoculated with the inoculum. The inoculated fruits were transferred to a cold room and decay diameter was measured after four months. The pomolgical traits including pH, total soluble solids, titrable acidity, force to break epidermis and cortex hardness were measured before transferring the fruits into the cold room. Based on results, different cultivars and genotypes exhibited different resistance levels (P¡Ü0.01). Mashhad and Granny smith were rated as the most susceptible and resistant, respectively. Diverted correlations were observed between decay diameter with force to break epidermis and cortex hardness and between total soluble solids and titrable acidity, a direct correlation esixted between force to break epidermis and cortex hardness but due to the weakness of these correlations, they are not propsed as decay resistance indicators
