Response of sugar beet commercial varieties to rhizoctonia root and crown rot disease under field conditions

Rhizoctonia root rot is a prevailent disease in most beet production areas of Iran. This soilborne disease could be effectively controlled by using disease resistant varieties in infected fields. In this research, some foreign sugar beet varieties as well as domestic hybrids were evaluated as a 25-variety experiment with 4 replications in two naturally infected locations (Mahsad and Uromieh) in 2011. In each location, yield and quality characteristics were measured in addition to disease resistance assessement. In Uromieh, the varieties did not significantly differ for all the traits except purity and molassed sugar, and only the variety F-20755 showed the lowest disease score and was found to be, though non-significantly, better than the mean of checks with respect to root yield and sugar yield. In Mashad (Torbat-e-Jaam), 6 varieties were discarded due to the high infection of the field to beet cyst nematode and the yield and quality of the other varieties were also influenced by the unusual condition of the trial. This made it impossible to draw statistical inference and valid results from the trial.
