Study on seed and oil yield adaptation of winter safflower varieties and lines in the semi-cold areas under rain-fed conditions.

Studies in recent years showed that wnter planting of safflower in semi-cold drylandy of Iran is possible and due to its suitable adaptability can place in rotation with wheat and checkpea very well. To study the yield adaptabiliy and stability of safflower genotypes this study carried out with 13 promising varieties of safflower along with two checks (Zarghan 279 and Sina) in 3 locations viz; Kermanshah, Ilam and lorestan under rainfed condition. This experiment conducted in RCBD with 3 replications. Each variety was planted in 5 rows with 5 m length and 30 cm row spacing. During growth period some agronomic characters and after harvesting seed weight, seed yield and oil content have been measured. The results of Ilam and Lorestan in 2008-09 rejected due to severe drought (low precipitation) so, in general six environments analyzed. The results showed significant differences among environments for seed yield and three other traits that revealed different yield potentials for locations. The differences among genotypes were also significant for seed yield and three other traits. The seed yield grand mean of genotypes in Lorestan (972 Kg/ha) was more than other two locations (857.9 and 927.1 Kg/ha). The results of ranking method showed that 411 genotypes with 2.67 rank had the best seed yield position and the lowest rank standard deveiation (0.78) as compare to other genotypes. The grand mean yield of 411 genotype was 1021.78 Kg/ha which was third after Sina and 62 genotype. The oil content of this line was intermediate and due to spinless and red color of florets it can be harvested by hand and florets also can be harvested.
