Evaluation of resistance of sugar beet varieties to rhizoctonia root rot disease

Rhizoctonia root rot is a prevailent disease in most beet production areas of Iran. This soilborne disease could be effectively controlled by using disease resistant varieties in infected fields. In this research, some foreign sugar beet varieties as well as domestic hybrids were evaluated as a 36-variety experiment with three replications in three naturally infected locations (Mahsad, Kerman and Uromieh) in 2010. In each location, yield and quality characteristics were measured in addition to disease resistance assessement. After data analysis and comparision of sugar yield and disease resistance, the suitable varieties for each location were identified. In Mashad, there were no significant differences among the varieties in root and sugar yield and non of the varieties were superior to the mean of resistant checks but the varieties F-20699, F-20739 and F- 20726 had significantly lower impurities and higher purity than the the mean of resistant checks. Among these, the varieties F-20699and F-20726 showed the lowest disease score (about 1%). These were followed by the variety F-20694 which was superior to the mean of resistant checks in root quality and disease resistance. In Uromieh, the varieties did not significantly differ for all the traits except root yield and only the variety F-20694 was found to be better than the checks with respect to root yield and also showed the lowest disease score. In Kerman, it was not possible to harvest the trial and analyze the data due to the ununiformity in the emergence of the plants and high infection of the field. Because of the nonhomogeneity of error variances, it was impossible to combine the data of the two locations, Mashad and Uromieh. In conclusion, only the variety F-20751 demonstrated superiority to the mean of resistant checks averaged over the two locations.
