Development and Evaluation of Sugar Beet Single Cross Resistant to Bolting

This project was conducted male sterile monogerm and multigerm maternal parents (single cross) resistant to bolting in two separate programs. In the first program which was to develop monogerm female parent 9 monogerm otype lines (male sterility maintainer lines) and 9 cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines resistant to bolting were crossed in isolated plots and 36 crossing plots were provided. In the second program which was to develop multigerm female parents, six monogerm otype lines and four multigerm cytoplasmic male sterile(CMS) linrs were crossed and 24 crossing plotss were provided. In 2008 and 2009, monogerm and multigerm single crosses were evaluated for resistance to bolting in Moghan and Dezful areas, and also were evaluated for the qualitative and quantitative traits in Dezful. Evaluations of multigerm single crosses were done in 2008 in Dezful area. The results showed that the single cross 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14 and 20 with less than five percent bolting were superior to the other genotypes in Dezful. The results in Moghan area in 2009 showed that the single crosses 16, 20, 25, 28, 31 and 35 had the lowest precentage bolting than the other genotypes. Genotypes evaluations for resistance to bolting in Dezful area in 2009 was not possible due to lack of favorable conditions. Therefore, based on sugar yield, the genotypes 25, 7, 38, 20, 26 , 8 ,14, and 27 were superior to the other genotypes. Superior genotypes will be included in breeding programs to improve resistance to bolting and to develop hybrids for winter cultivation of sugar beets.
