INVESTIGATION OF WATER STRESS PERIODS AFTER COTYLEDON STASE ON QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF SUGAR BEET

Saving Irrigation Water for Sugar beet producers at the beginning of the season is very important due the timing of small cereal grain. The effect of water stress during the initial growth of sugar beet on quality and quantity of sugar beet roots were studied , in Kabotar - Abad Agricultural Station on clay silty loam soil. The treatment were six dry period after seedling establishment, according to 100 , to 600 mm class A pan evaporation by 100 mm increment, (Ii to I6). hi 1998, The effect of dry periods treatment on root yield were not significant, but sugar percent increased and sodium content decreased by increasing dry period to more of 400 mm class A pan evaporation. During growing season after full groundcover, in dry period treatments less than or equal to 300 mm pan evaporations leaf yellowing were observed. In 1999, increasing length dry periods , decreased root yield, which may be caused by decreasing carbohydration, transformation from leaf In all treatments Sc was Low due to low leaf area index. However, in I4 to i6 treatments the sc was significantly higher than other treatments, which may be due to small root sizes. Treatments which received enough water, The Sc decreased due to revegetative growth toward the end of growing season, with increasing dry periods, white sugar and yield were decreased . But, only h treatment, root and white sugar yield were signficantly lower than the rest of the treatment, and could not be recovered from excessive stress. More Investigations are required to study foliage re- growth of sugar beet in the late season in relation to the environmental factors and cultivars respons to early season water stress.
