Three species of Lathyus originated from pastures of East Azarbaijan (Iran) were studied based on number, size and type of chromosomes. Between these assessments karyotypic characteristics of Lathyrus incurvus and L. pratensis where surveyed for the first time. Five metaphases were drawn for each species, and eight karyotypic characteristics were evaluated.The results of this study revealed that all species (L. cicera, L. incurvus and L. pratensis) have 2n=2x=14 chromosomes with the basic number being x=7. L. cicera with total haploid complement of 52.15 micron had a karyotype formula of 5m+2sm, L. incurvus and L. pratensis with total haploid complement of 41.47 and 44.14 µ respectively, showed same kryotype formula 1m+6sm. In the view point of Stebbin's symmetry class, all karyotypes were moderately symmetrical and fell in 2A category but appointment of Romero Zarco asymmetry index, L. cicera showed symmetric karyotype and two other species possessed asymmetric karyotypes.Analysis of variance based on length of short arm and total chromosome length at 1% showed significant difference. The comparison of means using Duncan test at 5% revealed L. cicera has the highest chromosome length. Analysis of cluster based on eight karyotypic parameters placed species in two groups, first cluster was comprised of annual species L. cicera and perennial species L. incurvus and L. pratensis formed second cluster. The principal component analysis approved this grouping too. The results of both analyses revealed grouping in studied species follows their life cycle (being annual or perennial).
