A preliminary study on efficacy of film-forming polymers to control pomegranate fruit moth, Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Lep.: Pyralidae), in pomegranate orchards

Pomegranate Fruit Moth (PFM), Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Lep.: Pyralidae), is the most important of pomegranate in Iran and other pomegranate producing countries. Several different methods including collecting and burning of infested fruits, mechanical and biological control, stamen-removing and kaolin spray have been suggested to control this pest. One way that may prevent fruits to be infected is the obstruction from laying moth s eggs inside fruit crown.. To assess the impact of two types of film-forming polymers including polyvenyl alcohol (PVA) and herbal resin, on damage of pomegranate fruit moth, preliminary trials were conducted in the fields during 2010-2011 years in Garmsar regions. Based on the field studies, the infection rates of PFM were 21 and 9% for control and treatment (two times soray 0.25% conventration of herbal resin), respectively. Also the result showed that, the fruit cracking damages was reduced in polymer treatments. Therefore, herbal resin spray (0.25% conventration) over the fruit crown of pomegranate, two times at 2 3 week intervals, in the early June, could be used successfully to reduce PFM damage on pomegranate.
